Dr. Rosenfeld spells out the details on how to prevent, treat, and/or slow down virtually every disorder and complication of aging, including Alzheimer's, cancer, heart disease, impotence, cataracts, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, stroke, and loss of vision.
The genial Dr. Rosenfeld (Symptoms and Doctor, What Should I Eat?) should have another bestseller to his credit with this wise, sensible guide to delaying and preventing the diseases of aging. His prescription calls for sound nutritional habits, exercise, preventive health care and the latest medical information and pharmaceuticals, especially hormone replacement therapies. Rosenfeld's goal is to arm readers with knowledge so they will take care of themselves and recognize and treat problems as early as possible. He succeeds admirably and, remarkably, without gimmicks. Instead, there's straight talk about the major diseases and issues related to aging: Alzheimer's, cancer, heart attack, osteoporosis, stroke, arthritis, hearing loss, depression, insomnia, skin care, vision and dental problems. The chapters on menopause, sexual dysfunction and prostate problems are especially candid and helpful. Explaining each condition in unintimidating language, he discusses symptoms, risk factors, treatments and defensive strategies. What distinguishes this book from others aimed at the turning-50 crowd is Rosenfeld's ease in making medicine understandable, without oversimplifying or condescending, and his lively optimism. The occasional pun may inspire groans, but given the book's strengths, they are forgivable. Thanks to the doctor's gift for establishing a relationship with his reader, this book deserves to be read widely and thoroughly. Major ad/promo; 5-city author tour.
