This book was written with the intention of helping educators and researchers to understand the lives of adolescent gang members and rethink their assumptions about them as students. Four ethnographic case studies tell the stories of Mexican American male adolescents who were active members of the Crips gang at the same time that they were Smith's students in an alternative high school program. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which literacy practices keep gang members and other marginalized children from full participation in the school community.
