Established for fifteen years as the standard work in the field, Melvin Lewis's Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: A Comprehensive Textbook is now in its Fourth Edition. Under the editorial direction of Andrés Martin and Fred R. Volkmar—two of Dr. Lewis's colleagues at the world-renowned Yale Child Study Center—this edition has been reorganized into a more compact, clinically relevant book and completely updated, with two-thirds new contributing authors.
The new structure incorporates economics, diversity, and a heavy focus on evidence-based practice. Numerous new chapters include genetics, research methodology and statistics, and the continuum of care and location-specific interventions.
A companion Website provides instant access to the complete, fully searchable text at www.lewischildpsychiatry.com.

Description:This comprehensive textbook of child and adolescent psychiatry is accompanied by access to an online version as well. Previous editions were published in 1991, 1996, and 2002.
Purpose:The authors provide an update to reflect a more modern approach and the "evolving discipline." This edition is much revised and reorganized and the authors note that it has 46 fewer chapters. The goal is to provide a book that can improve the mental health of children and adolescents, a goal the authors meet.
Audience:The audience includes mental health professionals and other healthcare professionals treating children and adolescents. The authors are well known in the field and "the Lewis" is a household name with child and adolescent psychiatrists and psychologists.
Features:This book covers everything from basic diagnostic and treatment issues to ethics, policy, culture, genetics, and research. The main sections cover approaching the discipline, scientific foundation, developmental framework, classification, specific disorders, treatment, and interface areas. The book most definitely provides a more modern approach to our field. The authors compromised a bit on some previously included chapters that were useful -- specifically the developmental chapters. The online site is very user friendly with reference links and the ability to print out chapters/sections.
Assessment:This edition has some new appealing features, including more up-to-date information on genetics and research and a more modern approach to our field.
