Inspired by Jeffrey Stern's 1997 monograph Lewis Carroll, Bibliophile, Lovett—a North Carolina-based collector of items relating to Charles Dodgson's life and work—has created a more capacious catalogue of the author and mathematician's library, which was quickly dispersed after his death in January 1898. Dodgson's book-buying and reading habits are documented in a number of primary sources, including sale catalogues and extant items. Lovett's thoroughly indexed entries, alphabetized by title, record every book Dodgson is known to have owned or read, describing each book, its edition, its contents, its importance, and the relevance it might have had to Dodgson. The volumes cover a huge array of interests: homeopathic medicine, spiritualism, astrology, evolution, women's rights, children's literature, linguistics, theology, eugenics.
