Children's Literature

Almost more confusing than entertaining, this third episode in the "Leven Thumps" series jumps between worlds (Reality and Foo), between places on the worlds, and between characters/perspectives in both. The most interesting parts of the narrative are the author's pseudo-philosophical asides at the beginnings of several chapters. Filled with fantastical creatures that look strange and have even stranger names, it's difficult to tell the good guys from the bad. Without previous knowledge, readers won't learn much useful about the relationships between the characters, even if they do read the appended glossary. For those familiar with the previous two volumes, Leven, Geth, Winter and Clover are together in Foo at the start of the story, but quickly become separated after Leven gives up both the secret and the key. Meanwhile, back in Reality, Sabine has taken over Dennis' body and is using him and Tim to reconstruct the gateway that will connect the two worlds. Leven gets to meet his grandfather and see his mother, war on Foo seems imminent, and both worlds are being seriously messed with by evil forces. This is definitely not recommended fare for anyone who hasn't read the previous books in the series. In truth, there is not much to recommend it even for those who have.
