Book Synopsis

The Third Edition of this classic surgery text is the ideal resource for veterinary students and equine and mixed large animal practitioners. The book can be used both as an introduction to the fundamental techniques of large animal surgery and as an easy-to-use guide for quick reference in the field. The step-by-step technique sections have been restructured to allow faster access to information, including objectives and lists of equipment needed for each procedure. In addition to general updates throughout, this edition features new sections on minimally invasive surgery, laser surgery, and laparotomy. Coverage includes surgical techniques for horses, cows, pigs, goats, and select exotic species. Most techniques presented can be performed without the advantages of a fully equipped large animal hospital or teaching institution.

Reviewer:Matthew Stewart, BVSc, PhD(University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description:In addition to updating many common surgical procedures used in large animal practice, this new edition marks a change of editorial responsibilities from Drs. Turner and McIlwraith (second edition of 1989) to Dr. Dean Hendrickson of Colorado State University.
Purpose:As noted in the preface to the first edition, the objective of this book is to "present some fundamental techniques in large animal surgery to both veterinary students and large animal practitioners." The third edition of this highly successful book achieves this goal admirably.
Audience:The book is not designed for specialist surgeons and it does not cover more sophisticated surgical techniques such as arthroscopy, laparoscopy, and major reconstructive procedures. However, it does provide comprehensive descriptions of many surgical conditions and procedures that are commonly encountered in a general large animal practice, compiled by a recognized expert in large animal surgery.
Features:The first eight chapters address general aspects of large animal surgery, dealing with issues such as presurgical considerations, anesthesia, instrumentation, suture materials and patterns, and wound management. These introductory chapters are well supported by figures, photographs, and information tables. Four chapters (chapters 9-12) are devoted to orthopedic, urogenital, upper respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal surgery in horses, while chapters 13 through 15 focus on surgical procedures in cattle. The final chapters, 16 and 17, present information on surgical techniques in swine, goats, and llamas. The new edition includes updates on recent anesthetic and sedative agents, current surgical instrumentation, and newly developed suture materials. The illustrations accompanying the suture patterns and wound management have been revised to provide more graphic detail on current surgical techniques. Of particular value, lists of required surgical equipment are provided with each procedure to facilitate preoperative preparation and planning.
Assessment:This new edition should prove to be a valuable resource for veterinary students with a particular interest in large animal surgery and veterinary practitioners with a significant large animal caseload.
