Book Synopsis

The best laboratory math text on the market for almost 20 years, this title covers both the general principles of mathematics and specific equations, formulas, and calculations used for laboratory testing. It provides simple, easily understood explanations of calculations commonly used in clinical and biological laboratories. Contains more than 1000 practice problems.

Edward W. Bermes

This is the fifth edition of a book that provides asimplified explanation of the calculations used in clinical andbiological laboratories. All calculations are covered beginning withsimple arithmetic and continuing through quality control. This bookis intended to help the student who has an inadequate background inmathematics develop the essential skills necessary to meet thestandards for competent laboratory work in today's laboratory. Thebook is written primarily for laboratory technology students but couldserve as a refresher for those who are in the field (possibly goingthrough cross training). This book would probably be of most use tothe student who has had a very limited exposure to collegemathematics. Each chapter begins with a set of well-statedobjectives. Both students and teachers should find these helpful. Ample practice problems are found at the end of each chapter. Some ofthe references might be updated, and putting the appropriatebibliography at the end of each chapter might be of more help to thestudent. This is a basic but comprehensive text on laboratorymathematics beginning with simple arithmetic, continuing throughfactors, logarithms, standard curves, and quality control. Moststudents graduating from college in this ""computer age"" could learnfrom the section on significant figures in the first chapter. Alllibraries and clinical laboratories should have a copy of this bookavailable.
