Book Synopsis

Criticas

This immortal play, written around 1635 by the playwright who dominated Spain's golden age of theater, explores the conflict between free will and predestination. Calderon de la Barca (1600-81) tells the story of the king of Poland who imprisoned his son in a tower to prevent the predictions of astrologers, who saw the boy taking his father's throne, from coming true. After several years, the king has a change of heart, drugs his son, and takes him to the palace for a trial. But his son behaves so badly that the king puts him back in the tower. Soon, however, a peasant uprising liberates the prisoner and puts him on the throne. Fearful of waking once more in the tower, he conducts himself with discretion this time.
