Tim Wadham - Criticas

Gr 5+This junior graphic novel deals with the immigrant experience to which many young émigrés to America will relate. Twelve-year-old Manuel moves with his family from Peru to Australia at the time of the Sydney Olympics, and his mother finds work cleaning houses. In a series of loosely connected adventures of Manuel and his Aborigine friends, this book addresses issues of racism and poverty that cross cultural boundaries. While the message is clear you have to go on despite discrimination the Australian Aborigines are at times drawn crudely, in a manner that could be interpreted as emphasizing stereotypes. Though it could be said that they reflect Manuel s perceptions of a strange new world, and, finally, the book s strength is the characters mutual acceptance. The Iberian Spanish includes some regionalisms, and a few typos. While the stereotyped figures may have been unintentional, this should be strongly considered before purchasing this title.
