More than 50 hands-on projects for original artwork are provided while teaching a variety of techniques and concepts in sculpture, prints, design, textiles and texture.
Over 100 art activities are included in this collection. There are three levels of complexity that are clearly indicated on each project, as well as a complete list of supplies. The groups of activities focus on patterns, printmaking, sculpture, and textures. Various famous artists, such as Jackson Pollack, have been identified as the inspiration for specific projects. They are quoted and a brief bio is included. Many of the projects will be familiar, some with a unique twist. Others are more unusual, like the doll made out of roots from the garden or tangled phone wire, or the art-in-the-round roller coaster ride. The sculpture hat is one of my favorites. The black-and-white line illustrations are inviting and provide helpful information. This is a very kid friendly book with lots of ideas plus the bonus of an introduction to 24 master artists. 1999, Williamson Publishing, Ages 4 to 12, $12.95. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
