Author Biography: Kathy Ross

Book Synopsis

These number-based crafts are designed to help children remember the shape and the concept of numbers one through ten. Beginning with a One and Only Me craft and ending with a Ten in an Envelope Bed, each number has its own special project. Then there are a series of projects that show the many ways in which numbers are used, such as a Play Cell Phone, a Play Alarm Clock, Coin Family Puppets, and Mama Foot-Long Worm and Her Twelve Baby Inchworms. In developing these hands-on projects, Kathy Ross drew on her thirty years' experience as a preschool teacher and curriculum developer. Each of the twenty easy-to-make crafts features step-by-step illustrated instructions, and is made from easy-to-find household materials.

Barbara Youngblood - Children's Literature

The author has several craft books to her credit and this one is equally fun. This time she has taken numbers and giving the reader crafts to make with each digit out of simple household items. A particular favorite is Mama Foot-Long Worm and Her Twelve Baby Inchworms, all made from rickrack trim, wiggle eyes and glue. Then one can use the inchworms to measure one's hands, feet, or pencils. There are suggestions for helping children learn the days of the week and marking calendars with special events in their lives or popular holidays. The reader will see a different way of looking at numbers. I never had associated two-hole reinforcement tabs with the head and body of a bunny before, or four heart shapes with a four-leaf clover, or the number three becoming bear's ears. Time to get a larger storage box for household things that could be crafted into many different learning tools with the help of Ms. Ross' books. 2003, The Millbrook Press,
