She has an undergraduate degree in Journalism from Boston University and an M.S. in Library Science from Simmons College.
The revised edition of Cates' bibliographic guide to print and electronic sources in print and broadcast journalism adds about 200 individual entries and a new chapter on Internet sources; it details Web-based resources, portals, online files, listservs, newsgroups, and weblogs. Cates, a librarian who created and directed the library at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, also has made significant revisions to the chapters on directories, yearbooks, and collections; core periodicals; societies and associations; research centers and archives; and miscellaneous sources.
