Book Synopsis

It was a big night for Josh Beckett and the Florida Marlins. They had a chance to win the 2003 World Series. To do it, however, they needed to stop the New York Yankees. Even though Josh had pitched only three days earlier, the team's manager called on him to start the game. Could Josh help the Marlins win the championship?

Children's Literature

Designated the Most Valuable Player in the 2003 World Series, pitcher Josh Beckett struck out every opposing New York Yankee player who came to bat in Game 6. Succinct chapters describe Beckett's development as a pitcher, beginning with Little League and intensifying at Spring High School in his Texas hometown. His swift fastballs and evasive curveballs overwhelmed batters, resulting in Beckett being selected as the 1999 USA Today's High School Pitcher of the Year. The Florida Marlins drafted Beckett that year. After playing in minor league games, Beckett started major league play in September 2001, the same year he was chosen Minor League Player of the Year. Impeded by injuries, Beckett endured his team losing games in 2003 until new Marlins' manager Jack McKeon oversaw players' performances. Beckett's pitching saved the Marlins in playoff games against the Chicago Cubs, securing the right to compete against the New York Yankees in the World Series. The Marlins defeated the Yankees due to Beckett's striking out batters. Illustrations include photographs of Beckett as a Little League, high school, and professional player and his rookie baseball card. A glossary defines baseball terminology. The bibliography lists The Dallas Morning News and Sports Illustrated without specifying articles. The source for a quotation by McKeon is not cited. Part of "World Series Superstars" series.
