Jalil Roshandel is Associate Professor and Director of Security Studies program at the Department of Political Science, East Carolina University. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science at the Universitè Toulouse I Science Sociales, France, and earned a Certificate of Achievement in Peace Research from the International University in Oslo, Norway. He was the deputy dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Science at the University of Tehran in Iran through 1994. Since 1997 he has been a guest researcher and/or professor at many of the world's leading universities and research institutions including the Middle East Technical University in Turkey; Stanford University Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC), the University of California, Los Angeles; and Duke University. Roshandel has written several books (in Farsi) and numerous journal articles and book chapters on Middle East in general and Iranian foreign and security policy in particular. His most recent book chapter "The Nuclear Controversy in the Context of Iran's Evolving Defence Strategy" was published in Europe and Iran: Perspectives on Non-Proliferation (2005). Sharon Chadha has written (and co-written) for various publications including RUSI Journal, the publication of the Royal United Services Institute, the world's oldest security and defense think tank in London; RFE/RL Newsline, a publication produced by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, FrontPageMagazine.com and the Middle East Quarterly.
The book explores the global jihad movement and its emergence in the latter half of the twentieth century. The book investigates the nature and extent of this threat; traces its religious and ideological roots; relevant history; the goals of the movement; who is fighting jihad; how they end up in the movement; how it is being funded and sponsored; and what nations, particularly the United States, one of the movement's primary targets, are doing to counter the threat. The book, intended for the general public, assumes that the reader has only a minimal background of this compelling contemporary topic. While the authors tried to avoid using academic jargon, they have tried to source the book so that it could be used in political science, international relations, and defense and security studies courses.
