Library Journal

Editors Goodall et al. (London School of Economics) have assembled an international collection of annotated titles in business history, ranging from single company histories to histories of numerous types of businesses, including sources from foreign publishers. The chapters are arranged in eight broad categories such as heavy industry, banking and finance, retail, etc., and each chapter is further divided into still more categories, including major world regions such as Japan, Europe, and U.S.A. Many titles are entered in additional categories and referenced to a main entry that contains the thumbnail annotations (one to two short sentences). Referenced listings are mostly newer sources, although older classics are included. There are also biographical sources to key leaders of an identified company or in the area of business in which they succeeded. This superb reference contains more company listings than the International Directory of Company Histories (LJ 3/1/92) and World Class Business (LJ 8/92), although the IDCH and WCB material on the selected company is much more lengthy. This source also easily updates without replacing other related references, such as the Guide to Business History (1964) and the International Business Bibliography (Hein, 1989). This is an extremely specialized reference, highly recommended for all university libraries supporting business schools; it is an excellent supplement to the Business Periodicals Index and the International Bibliography of Economics. Be forewarned that the heavy dose of sources not in our domestic publishing stream may frustrate users wishing to get their hands on these international works. For business school students and faculty, this is an excellent source to start a business history research project.-Dale Farris, Groves, Tex.
