Book Synopsis

What does the Bible have to say to a young mother at home nursing her baby? What role models for intelligent, talented women can we find in Scripture? What was everyday life like for women in biblical times? What does Scripture have to say to women by viewing Scripture through their concerns and insights?

This creative effort searches the Scriptures in light of the many theological, biblical, sociological and psychological concerns of women. It will prove of value to pastors in preparing sermons, to Bible study leaders and teachers in preparing lessons, to college and seminary students in researching study assignments, and to individual readers in broadening their understanding of the richness of biblical revelation.

Publishers Weekly

Some 88 women and men from around the world here provide commentary on most passages of the 66 books of the Protestant Bible, focusing on the meaning behind biblical gender interpretations. Designed to complement rather than supplement traditional biblical commentaries, their contributions are enhanced by 77 brief articles and 50-plus illustrations, tables, and more, all of which provide insight into biblical times and customs. Most of the commentary and brief articles include a basic bibliography, and both a scriptural and a supplementary article index enhance the volume. The inclusion of more Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox scholarship and full commentary instead of just an article on intertestamental history and literature would have increased the comprehensiveness and scope of this book, but it is nevertheless an admirable and very useful volume for lay people, clergy, and even biblical scholars. It is also the only commentary available with this specific focus; Women in Scripture: A Dictionary of Named and Unnamed Women in the Hebrew Bible, the ApocryphalDeuterocanonical Books, and the New Testament is differently organized and comments on the women rather than on the biblical passages. Highly recommended. Carolyn M. Craft, Longwood Coll., Farmville, VA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
