Book Synopsis

Did you know that a cantle is the rear part of a saddle? Or that a jibbah is the bulge on the face of an Arabian horse located between the eyes? Over 6,600 common, specialized, and medical words and terms associated with equine care and training are defined in this comprehensive dictionary. Also included are slang terms and breeds of horses. Illustrations are provided for many of the definitions.

Library Journal

Throughout history the horse has been a frequent subject of books and works of art, but this reference is the first attempt to collect and define the entire body of horse-related language. Approximately 6600 terms are listed and defined in standard dictionary format (although pronunciation and syllabification are not included). Words relate to all aspects of equine culture: physiological/medical terms, horse breeds, history, horse care and equipment, and equine sports. Many of the definitions include illustrations, especially for less well-known terms. Cross references direct the user to the correct form of the term when an entry could be listed more than one way. Some of the words could easily be found in any dictionary (e.g., biology, ribbon), but many are unique to the equestrian world or have specific horse-related meanings. The author, an accomplished horsewoman, spent over seven years researching and compiling the dictionary. Recommended as a reference source for large equine collections and where interest warrants.-Deborah Emerson, Monroe Community Coll. Lib., Rochester, N.Y.
