Reviewer:Ronald P. Jensh, B.A., M.A., Ph.D.(Thomas Jefferson University)
Description:This well written and illustrated textbook presents a visual approach to the fields of histology, cell biology, and some pathology, although the latter two get less attention than histology, which is the primary focus.
Purpose:The purpose, as stated by the author, is to present a visual approach to histology. To that end, numerous color illustrations and photographs are incorporated into each chapter. This is an excellent approach since histology is, by nature, a visual science.
Audience:Although the title includes cell biology and there is an introduction to pathology, the primary focus in on histology. The book would be appropriate for first year medical students as well as upper division (second and third year) college students and graduate students. It could also serve as a quick review for medical students preparing for Step I of the USMLE exams and for residents and practitioners as a quick reference.
Features:The book covers the histology of the major tissues and organ systems of the human body in a very traditional and appropriate order. It is heavily illustrated with color drawings and photographs. In many instances, the illustrations are presented with an associated photograph, which is helpful to the reader. The general layout of the book and its use of color are particularly appealing. The visual approach has always been a favored teaching method of mine and this book is excellent in the use of this educational technique. A minor shortcoming of the book concerns some of the photographs. The author has obviously spent considerable time and effort in producing outstanding color illustrations, so it is curious why the color balance is not good in some of the photographs, since this is so easy to do using digital photography. Also of concern is the title. This is primarily a text of histology and, although the basics of cell biology are covered, the latter hardly deserves to have the same emphasis in the title. Also, it is not really an introduction to pathology, since the basic pathologic processes are not discussed, but rather clinical pathologic illustrations are used in each chapter.
Assessment:This is a well written, well produced, high quality textbook. Its visual approach to the topic is most valuable and is of great help for students studying this material for the first time. There are numerous other texts of histology, but the unique visual approach of this one will make it a valuable addition to a library.
