The book achieves its purpose of providing a review in a concise, intense format so readers will gain the maximum benefit from self-study, a worthy goal.
Audience:Students, physicians, and teachers of medicine, microbiology, and clinical immunology will find this study guide a useful element of preparation for certification examinations. In addition, the self-testing section will help readers determine personal areas of weakness that require additional study.
Features:A narrative description of microorganisms is organized by cell type: bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Infectious diseases of humans, arranged by nine organ systems, are reviewed in a separate 21-page chapter. The final two chapters review key words and clinical case scenarios. Many of the illustrations are thumbnail-sized pictures of microorganisms; although small, they do portray critical visible features. Although there are minimal references to supporting literature, readers likely will already have extensive knowledge of such references and will use this book as a final preparatory guide for standardized tests.
Assessment:In comparison with massive textbooks such as Mandell, Douglas, and Bennett's Principles and Practice of Infectious Diseases, 6th edition (Elsevier, 2005), this less detailed study guide provides a convenient alternative for persons desiring to acquire as much information as possible in a highly efficient format.
