How do teeth chew food? Why is sugar bad for teeth? Why should you visit the dentist?
Gr 1-3-These guides provide the basics about their respective subjects. The first book discusses vitamins and minerals, fiber, the food pyramid, and the ways that different food groups are used by the body. The second title describes the purpose of hair and how to care for it, including dealing with head lice. The last book defines the various types of teeth and discusses dental hygiene. It is the best of the bunch. All three titles are illustrated with appealing, close-up color photos. Loreen Leedy's The Edible Pyramid: Good Eating Every Day (Holiday, 1994), Joan Kalbacken's The Food Pyramid (Children's, 1998), and Lizzy Rockwell's Good Enough to Eat: A Kid's Guide to Food and Nutrition (HarperCollins, 1999) offer more coverage, as do Alice B. McGinty's Staying Healthy: Dental Care (PowerKids, 1997) and Laurie Keller's Open Wide (Holt, 2000). Hair deals with a topic not readily available in other titles for this age group, so libraries may want to add it.-Kate Kohlbeck, Randall School, Waukesha, WI Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
