Reviewer:Vicki Ann Moss, DNSc, MS, BSN, RN(University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh)
Description:This book is a collection of today's best examples of nursing artistry. It includes a wide range of works including poems, photographs, drawings, needlework, quilting, and short stories produced by close to 100 nurses.
Purpose:This book seeks to answer three questions: What is art?, What is nursing art?, and When is nursing art? The editor hopes to improve the humanity of nursing in this technological age, and promote a healing environment for the patient, the nurse, and the nursing profession.
Audience:This beautiful text, filled with expressions of nursing's art, is appropriate for all nurses, student nurses, and any person who is close to a nurse or the nursing profession. According to the editor, it has been used as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students, given as gifts, and placed in nursing report rooms for all nurses to escape into esthetics.
Features:The book begins with a foreword by Jean Watson, and an introduction by the editor including "The Origins of the HeART of Nursing", "When is Nursing Art?", and "Creating Art: Messages from the Artists". There are ten chapters, a few of which include "The Nature of Nursing", "Art in Research", "Bookends: Birth and Death", and "The Extraordinary Ordinary". A new chapter is included on caring for children. It is filled with color and black and white pictures of numerous art forms as well as pictures of many of the artists.
Assessment:As stated by Jean Watson, this is "truly a one-of-a-kind classic, a collector's item, a work that points the way toward a new revelation about the compassionate, humanistic nature of nursing at its finest depth and beauty" (p. xv). It is filled with examples of nursing's humanity and holistic engagement with life, a true work of art.
