Historically, relatively few investigations in neuropsychology have been sensitive to the analysis of cultural variables. This handbook will assist the neuropsychologist interested in cultural competence and help increase understanding of the link between cultural competence in assessment and intervention and good treatment outcomes.
The handbook authors provide an in-depth discussion of the current status of multicultural training in neuropsychology; specific information on diverse groups (age, gender, ethnicity, etc.), assessment instruments, and clinical populations (HIV infected, seizure disorders, brain injuries); and unique analysis of immigration patterns, forensics, and psychopharmacology.
This volume is the first to summarize the cultural data available in neuropsychology. A valuable resource for clinical neuropsychologists, school psychologists and rehabilitation professionals.
After testing the concepts of neuropsychology and cultural competence against reality for four years, 21 studies provide a broad neuropsychological overview of different patient populations in the US. Many of them focus on psychosocial aspects of neuropsychological assessment and treatment, partly because of the abundance of data from cross-cultural psychology that cross over to neuropsychology, and partly because of the scarcity of research studies relating to relationships between behavior and the brain in a culturally competent way. They cover introductory material, special considerations in assessment and intervention with diverse groups, multicultural aspects of assessment and treatment of special populations, cross-cultural applications of assessment instruments, and special topics such as the differential diagnosis of Spanish-speaking preschool children and the significance of cultural factors in the assessment of criminal defendants.
