Book Synopsis

A landmark publication, The Handbook of Counseling defines the field of counselling - how it has developed, the current state of the discipline and profession, and where this dynamic field is going. Edited and with chapters contributed by the leaders in counselling education and research, including several past-presidents of the American Counselling Association, this Handbook is comprehensive in its scope.

Library Journal

Counseling is often viewed as a derivative or hybrid profession with roots in psychology, education, and other related fields. While acknowledging that history, the editors of this handbook convincingly argue that it is indeed a unique profession with a distinct knowledge base and other characteristics of professional status. The publisher partnered with Chi Sigma Iota, the international counseling honor society, to produce this weighty volume under the leadership of Locke (education, North Carolina State Univ.; Increasing Multicultural Understanding), Jane E. Myers (counseling and education, Univ. of North Carolina, Greensboro; Competencies for Gerontological Counseling), and Edwin L. Herr (former American Counseling Association president). A diverse group of identified contributors wrote 43 chapters organized into six major areas, including foundations of the field, settings and interventions, and research. Valuable references are provided. The editors conclude with a summary of the contributions and present their vision of the field's significant but uncharted future. This handbook is a hallmark of collaboration with a consistency of style and quality uncharacteristic of edited works. The readable essays are not limited to narrow concerns but cover topics and issues that would interest professionals in allied fields (e.g., mental health and health/wellness education) as well as students. Highly recommended for academic and professional counseling collections. Antoinette Brinkman, M.L.S., Evansville, IN Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
