Book Synopsis

This pocket-sized handbook provides quick, easy access to the essential bedside information from Clinical Anesthesia, Sixth Edition. The most practical clinical pearls on what to do and how and when to do it are presented in concise outline format, with hundreds of tables, graphs, and algorithms that summarize and prioritize crucial points. Appendices include formulas, an electrocardiography atlas, a drug list, American Heart Association resuscitation protocols, difficult airway algorithms, and a malignant hyperthermia protocol. This edition has a new full-color design and colorized illustrations.

David J. Dries

This is the third edition of a handbook summarizing the content of the hardbound volume Clinical Anesthesia by the same editors. It also provides appendixes that summarize key medications and resuscitation protocols. The editors created a pocket-sized companion to the larger hardbound text. In addition, reference material for acute care in the operating room or the postanesthesia period is provided. The anesthesia practitioner or trainee may benefit from this handbook. The editors are national authorities in the field and have summarized chapters from the parent text. The handbook can be divided into two parts. The first 52 chapters summarize the content of the parent hardbound text published earlier in 1997. Topics covered include fundamental principles of anesthetics as well as fluid and electrolyte therapy, anesthesia preparation and management, and postanesthesia and consultant practices. The second portion of the handbook includes resuscitation protocols from the American Heart Association, a brief summary of key medications used, and a summary of recent standards of the Anesthesia Society of America (ASA). Chapters are presented in outline form. Bold type identifies major subheadings. Tables are frequent. References are not provided in the handbook but may be found in the parent text. A detailed index with separate citation for tables is included. This is a comfortable, functional companion for the parent text that may be used by the intended audience. Resuscitation protocols and other content represent current thinking in this field. The publisher also has a CD-ROM and softbound review text available to accompany the handbook and its parentvolume.
