Author Biography: Mary Joy Quinn

Mary Joy Quinn, RN, MA, has been the Director of the Probate Court of San Francisco Superior Court since 1989. Prior to that, she served as a conservatorship investigator for 12 years. As director, she supervises probate court investigators and examiners and coordinates the activities of the Probate Department. Prior to joining the Probate Court, Ms. Quinn served as a public health nurse and as the director of a psychiatric day treatment center for older adults. Her education includes a BS in General Nursing from the University of Oregon and a MA in Psychology focusing on gerontology from the University of San Francisco.

She has contributed to other publications focusing on elder abuse and neglect, conservatorship and guardianship, undue influence, and remedies for elder abuse and neglect with the civil and criminal courts. She is currently coordinating a state grant that focuses on access to the courts for elders, especially those who have been abused. She is a member of the California Judicial Council Probate and Mental Health Advisory Committee and a commissioner with the American Bar Association Commission on Law and Aging. She is also a board member of the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse.

Book Synopsis

A comprehensive text on guardianship for community health and social service practitioners for their work with adults who have diminished capacities. The author introduces the subject by reporting case examples of people who are affected, and the reasons for focusing on guardianships at this point in time. Useful appendices expand and supplement the text of the book.
