Author Biography: Harry S. Dent

Book Synopsis

According to one of America's boldest contrarians, Harry Dent, an exciting new era of expanding prosperity is just around the corner. Instead of endorsing today's conventional wisdom that the current recession will completely color the economic picture of the '90s, Dent, an outstanding trend spotter, predicts the greatest boom in the history of America will soon be upon us and he provides the tools to capitalize on the strategies and techniques he has successfully used with leading-edge companies around the world. Visionary and provocative, Dent asserts that the 1990s and the early years of the 21st century will be remembered for their unprecedented boom years rather than their early recessionary period. He gives a specific timetable for the economic trends he predicts, calling highs and lows in interest rates, inflation, and the stock market. In his daring and broadsweeping analysis, Dent documents the impact the waves of maturing baby boomers will have on all aspects of American life. With their vast spending power, innovative thinking, and creation of a new customized economy, the boomers' extraordinary numbers will create the earliest economic and business changes in North America. As it shifts into a high-gear expansion, the United States with its dominant numbers of baby boomers will regain its leadership position in world markets. Harry Dent forgoes the traditional tools of economic forecasting - government managed interest rates, imports and exports, the deficit, unemployment statistics, the money supply - and has instead created simple, reliable tools that anybody can use. You will be able to learn for yourself what will be happening in the economy and how to use the results to make informed decisions in your business, your work, and your personal investments. Create your own economic program for adapting to boom times as you learn what to do about preferred portfolios, specific types of stocks to invest in; growth markets of the 1990s, major social an

Publishers Weekly

Business consultant Dent here forecasts "a long unprecedented boom without inflation'' to coincide in the late 1990s with the "baby-boom'' generation's years of maximum lifetime spending. Economic trends are absolutely predictable, the author claims, as he interrelates productivity, politics and demography with interest rates, inflation, deficits and unemployment to show how a post-WW II "automobile economy'' will yield presently to a global, U.S.-led, "customized'' economy based on minicomputers and software under personalized entrepreneurial management. Analyzing industrial cycles from 1900 into the near future, Dent postulates four product-development stages: innovation (with only high-ticket buyers), a cost-reduction-growth boom, a competitive shake-out period and a "maturity boom'' at popular prices. Identifying items entering this process (winter-sports duds yes, VCRs no) is the basis for business or investment success, according to Dent, whose scenario seems to assume stable conditions with no irrational financial panics, oil crises, world epidemics, Cold War revivals or aborted population trends.
