Book Synopsis

Revised and expanded edition of the classic games book for parents of toddlers which sold over 100,000 copies.

Meredith Kiger - Children's Literature

Early childhood educators believe that children learn by interacting with their environment and through social interaction. What better way to encourage healthy development in your child than through simple games that employ both social interaction and/or interaction with materials. This revised edition, written by an early childhood advocate, adds over 50 new games that will aid in the development of motor, auditory and visual skills, language and thinking skills, and self-concept skills. The games are aimed at 12 to 24 month-old children, but since children have their own developmental rate, the games could easily be appropriate for children up to 3 years old. The book is introduced by listing expected developmental skills in the age range of 12 to 24 months. Activities are then divided into 12-15 months, 15-18 months, 18-21 months and 21-24 months. Each activity is brief, easily understood and is categorized in areas such as eye-hand coordination, sense of smell, concentration, play skills and so on. For the toddler teacher, it would have been ideal if the games had been listed within the same Guidelines for Growth areas used in the introduction. That would have made finding the right game to assist a particular child much easier. Many of these games are activities we all experienced or used with our own children, but for first time mothers and fathers, this book's the berries. The 248 activities are occasionally accompanied by black and white drawings. A list of recommended books for toddlers and an index are included. 2002, Gryphon House,
