Book Synopsis

Written for the general reader (though not meant to be a substitute for a doctor visit), this four-volume reference contains about 600 entries on diseases, disorders, procedures, immunizations, drugs, and development of children up to age 18. The entries, which were written mainly by freelance medical writers in the US, include cross- references and definitions of key terms, as well as a list of resources. Entries on diseases and disorders address demographics, causes and symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, prevention, and parental concerns. The information is presented in clear, accessible, but detailed paragraphs, with bulleted lists of symptoms and other information, and definitions of key words offered in an inset box. Entries on drugs and immunizations provide helpful information on precautions, side effects, and interactions. A sampling of topics includes caffeine, chemotherapy, dental development, itching, neonatal jaundice, shyness, toxoplasmosis, and piercing and tattoos. Appendices contain a glossary, growth charts, and a descriptive list of common childhood medications. Annotation ©2005 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Reviewer:Douglas Moodie, M.D.(Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description:This is a four-volume encyclopedia of children's health from infancy through adolescence. The authors make it very clear that it is intended to be a supplement to, not a substitute for, consultation with a pediatric healthcare provider. The encyclopedia is extensive but not all-inclusive.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide a comprehensive encyclopedia of children's health from infancy through adolescence that is a one-stop source for medical information. It has been created for use by the lay public as well as by health professionals. It is worthwhile to have a complex encyclopedia of children's health that is written in a way that can appeal and be understandable to the lay public. The four volumes are extremely well done and certainly meet these objectives.
Audience:The audience is pediatric health professionals and the lay public interested and involved in children's healthcare issues.
Features:The book has some 600 full-length articles and uses a standardized format involving diseases and disorders, procedures, immunization and drugs, and development. The particular areas covered, such as atrial septal defects, go on to give a definition and a description of the defect, demographics, causes and symptoms, when to call the doctor, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up, and prognosis. Each section also deals with parental concerns and includes a wonderful key term index. The resources at the end of every subject cover books related to the topic, periodicals, organizations that are related to the condition, as well as web sites where one can find additional information.
Assessment:This is an extensive resource on healthcare issues in children written for the lay public that is easy to read, well illustrated and well organized. This reference will be a significant help to any one concerned with children's healthcare issues and outcomes.
