Author Biography: Todd Marks

Todd Marks is an avid developer, designer, instructor, and author of information display technologies. In 2000, Todd moved from teaching Mathematics and Computer Science in the public sector to becoming a Vice President of Research and Development at digitalorganism. In 2002, Todd founded Mindgrub Technologies and established a web technologies portal. In 2003, Todd joined Pope de Flash as the Head of Technology to form The Unity Project. Todd currently works as a Product Engineer for the mediaEdge division of Exceptional Software Strategies Inc.

Todd is a Macromedia Certified Developer, Designer, and Subject Matter Expert. His efforts have earned him three Flash Film Festival nominations, a Macromedia Site of the Day award, two Addy Awards, and several educational partnerships. Todd has written and contributed to several books including Macromedia Flash MX Video, Foundation Dreamweaver MX, Beginning Dreamweaver MX 2004, Advanced PHP for Flash, Macromedia Flash MX Components Most Wanted, and Macromedia Flash MX 2004 Magic.

Kristian has worked with Multimedia for three years, but has been creative with computers for much longer. He currently develops Flash-based material within an educational environment. This material includes interactive presentations to illustrate how scientific things work, as well as GUIs/tools allowing web-based content creation with basic computer skills. He was a contributing author on the seminal Flash Math Creativity, and many other friends of ED books. In 2002, he launched the world's first bi-annual HTML markup-based TableArt competition. The competition was an unbelievable success.

Brian is more than simply a Flash artist. He is a technologist with a love for great design, motion graphics, and music. Currently, he is a Senior Interactive Designer at nFusion Group in Austin, Texas. His role with nFusion includes creating dynamic Flash demos, videos, and sound design.

His future plans include filmmaking. Becoming a filmmaker has been a lifelong passion for Brian, and until that day comes he'll continue to create unique multimedia. Visit his website: www.monnone.com.

Book Synopsis

Go to Macromedia's web site, take a look at the list of the top ten features in the exciting new Flash MX release, and you'll find that the number one new feature is the ability to include genuine video material in Flash for the first time.

In Flash 5, incorporating video functionality in Flash presentations was possible for only a select few designers, and then only after a lot of hard work and some work-arounds. Now, Flash MX gives everyone the opportunity to use the dramatic impact of video in their site design, sure in the knowledge that the ubiquitous Flash player will allow their audience to view the results of their work.

friends of ED were the only publisher to take the increase of video use with Flash 5 seriously, and have substantial experience of publishing on Digital Video technologies with their DVision imprint. With Flash MX Video, they use this knowledge to take a reader from their first encounter with video to creating the ultimate Flash site with video and sound. The book includes:

  • How to edit and prepare digital video before bringing it into Flash

  • How to effectively load and use video in Flash

  • A fully worked, real-world case study using digital video and sound

  • The options for scripting with video

This book is not intended for those with substantial digital video experience and, as such, will not assume that the reader has access to expensive video-editing software. All you need for this book is Flash MX, and some imagination.

Author Biography: Hoss Gifford is one of the founding directors of Flammable Jam (www.flamjam.com), and curator of his personal site www.h69.net. He regularlysponges his way around the world, getting free flights in exchange for talking at new media seminars, including Flash Forward and Milia. Hoss reckons we should all take stuff a bit less seriously, and be happy with making 'quite nice things that entertain people for a wee while', as can be seen from his other two sites www.katakanaguestbook.com and www.flashsprint.com.

Kristian Besley was born in Wales, grew up in the same street as Catherine Zeta Jones, and read Media Arts following interests in film and design. To this day his love of all things lo-fi is extended to his pilipala.co.uk website. In his lack of spare time, you'll most likely find him playing 5-string punk rock guitar and reminiscing about how nothing else will ever be as good as the Spectrum 48k.
