Description:The goal of this book is to explain the role and impact of behaviors during all phases of the cancer care experience. Each chapter includes summaries and discussions of recent research on cancer-related behavioral interventions and suggestions for future research. Cancer care researchers and care providers are urged to become involved in evidence-based research and to use evidence-based findings to improve cancer care delivery.
Purpose:According to the authors, the book was written to describe the status and science of behavioral interventions across the cancer care trajectory -- from prevention to diagnosis and treatment, survivorship, reoccurrence, or death. The goal is to promote understanding of the role and impact of behaviors during cancer care.
Audience:The book should be useful to all professionals involved in cancer care or research, as well as to any other individuals seeking the current state of evidence-based research on behavioral interventions for cancer care.
Features:The book consists of 13 chapters, covering cancer-focused interventions for diet, activity, cancer screening, smoking cessation, psychological adjustment, decision-making, self-care, fatigue, pain management, complementary and alternative therapies, family caregiving, and end-of-life care. The book begins with a discussion of the state of knowledge of intervention research in cancer care and concludes with a discussion of the future direction of this research.
Assessment:This well-indexed, well-referenced book thoroughly assesses the state-of-the-science knowledge on behavioral interventions for detecting and treating cancer. Behavioral intervention studies are included on a wide variety of topics covering the full range of cancer care from prevention to the end-of life. Research summaries are supported by literature reviews and critical analyses of the interventions, findings, and limitations. Concerns and goals are identified for future research. By promoting further evidence-based research and the integration of behavioral interventions into patient care, this book takes a much needed step toward improving the lives of cancer patients and their families. The authors have met their stated goal of contributing significantly to the relatively new and rapidly growing body of behavioral intervention science.
