Madeline C. Smith is a professor and chair of the English Department at California University of Pennsylvania. Richard Eaton is emeritus professor of English at the West Virginia University and editor of the Eugene O Neill Society Newsletter. They are also the authors of Eugene O Neill: An Annotated International Bibliography, 1973 through 1999 (2001) and live in Morgantown, West Virginia.

This reference provides information on more than 3300 individuals who have appeared in or worked behind the scenes on productions of the plays of Eugene O'Neill. Each entry lists either the role played (for actors) or position filled (for crew) as well as the opening dates and place of the production and biographical details where available. The volume features three indexes: directors, producers, and technical personnel; production companies, theaters, and festivals; and plays and characters.
