Reviewer:Christopher J. Graver, PhD(Madigan Army Medical Center)
Description:The Essentials of Psychometric Assessment series spans many topics, from intellectual testing to psychological inventories. This addition to the series tackles the topic of Millon assessment inventories, which includes the MCMI-III along with six other instruments.
Purpose:This book is intended to provide clinicians with an interpretive guide to the Millon family of measures. The third edition provides updates on test revisions.
Audience:The intended audience includes licensed clinical psychologists who are qualified to administer and interpret psychometric testing, or doctoral students in this field. This is not a cookbook to assist unqualified users to learn and implement the tests. It requires a firm foundation in psychometrics and clinical psychology to reap the benefits and avoid harm to the patient. The author is well versed in personality assessment and developed the PACL, which is included in this book.
Features:The book is laid out in a very user-friendly manner, especially for students. Each chapter describes the inventory, provides a history of its development, and cites relevant psychometric research. The book then provides descriptions of the scales involved in each measure and walks the reader through a step-by-step interpretation strategy. While this is helpful for novice assessors, it lacks an overarching perspective on interpretation that more advanced clinicians will adopt. Strengths and weaknesses of each measure are discussed. Each chapter ends with practice questions for review and self-testing. There are sample printouts accompanied by illustrative case examples that walk through the interpretive steps previously outlined. The references are fairly current, but it appears that the most recent ones are about three years old. The index is full of topics, but missing some key points that have it falling short of optimal.
Assessment:Whereas more detailed and comprehensive information on each of these measures can be found in various publications, this book provides a single, concise place to find information about all of the Millon inventories. On the one hand, it is very well suited for instructing graduate students and should definitely be considered as part of required course reading. On the other hand, clinicians already familiar with these measures are unlikely to find much benefit. The third edition is helpful if readers are using one of the newer measures, but otherwise previous editions will suffice.
