This three-volume reference was prepared with general readers in mind, but it does not feature flashy graphics. There are several pages of color photos in each volume, but the photos interspersed throughout are small and b&w. Instead of going to fancy printing costs, the publisher's resources were marshalled to commission 300 essays of about three-to-eight pages in length. The essays are clearly written without jargon and include cross references and further resources. Each volume contains an alphabetical list of entries followed by a theme-organized list, showing which entries focus on individual animals, and which on careers in animal behavior, humans and animals, literature and arts, research methods, and prominent people. Topics in behavior include various aspects of aggression, behavioral phylogeny, caregiving, cognition, reproduction, social evolution, social organization, and tool use, to name but a few. Jane Goodall provides a brief foreword. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
