Book Synopsis

E. Buzawa (criminal justice, U. of Massachusetts, Lowell) and C. Buzawa, who conducts workplace education about domestic violence, confront the fact that research since the previous (1996 and 1990) editions on innovative criminal justice system intervention strategies has been inconclusive. Innovations discussed include specialized domestic violence courts, integrated domestic violence case management, victim advocacy, and community intervention projects. They frame the challenges in the context of defining and measuring domestic violence and its impact; risk markers; societal and historical factors; the evolving police response; and changing judicial responses, and conclude that evaluations of specific programs do not adequately take into account such sociopolitical issues as inadequate resources.
