The ninth and latest edition of this comprehensive guide to swine diseases and production information features extensively revised and updated chapters on physical examination and diagnosis, various viral and bacterial diseases (including several new disease chapters), other miscellaneous conditions and veterinary practice. Notwithstanding the title, this classic book covers not only infectious diseases of swine, but also includes chapters dealing with therapeutics, surgery and anesthesia, animal welfare, nutrition, and the provision of veterinary services.
Diseases of Swine, 9e is divided into 5 sections: Physical Examination and Diagnosis, Viral Diseases, Bacterial Diseases, Miscellaneous Conditions, and Veterinary Practice. The ninth edition reflects changes to our knowledge and management of swine diseases and addresses recent research and progress in the field. More than 100 distinguished and widely recognized contributing authors bring the latest information to this new edition. With liberal use of illustrative materials275 high quality illustrations and black and white photographs and more than a dozen color imagesDiseases of Swine, 9e offers unparalleled coverage and is an indispensable reference for the veterinary practitioner, from the new graduate to the seasoned swine practitioner.
This new edition is an indispensable and up-to-date reference text that belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in swine production, health and management.
This is a comprehensive book that addresses the current knowledge on porcine infectious and noninfectious disease as well as porcine production technology. This eighth edition is a revision of the seventh edition published in 1992. The objectives are to present the current knowledge base on porcine disease and production. These are lofty, considering the dynamic changes occurring in porcine production technology, medicine, and disease diagnosis and treatment. The reorganized structure and content, in addition to the new material, successfully meet these high aspirations. This book is a valuable asset for veterinary students and practitioners. It is comprehensive in scope yet detailed enough to be used as an initial reference guide for clinical or diagnostic specialists. The list of contributors is expanded over previous editions and represents an impressive list with experts currently well recognized in their fields. This edition covers the topics of initial exam and diagnosis, infectious diseases, noninfectious disease, and overviews of all major body systems and their disease processes. Each body system is covered in general, including a brief discussion of normal functions, and then most disease entities are expanded in detail in individual chapters. The addition of several new chapters updates the previous edition, addressing emerging diseases in swine medicine and novel porcine production issues arising with the molecular era of medicine. The addition of the chapter on interpretation of laboratory results effectively addresses the gap between diagnostic laboratory testing and interpretation of those results by the clinician. The chapter on differential diagnoses of swinediseases is thorough and offers a quick diagnostic reference. There are adequate numbers of good quality figures which highlight important cellular and histologic lesions. This is a broad reaching book on swine medicine and production which is both comprehensive and detailed. It is edited appropriately to provide sufficient detail in an easy format. It has traditionally been considered the standard text for swine diseases, and this new edition continues this tradition. The new additions in this text are accurate and needed in revising the previous edition and bringing it up to date to the present state of the swine industry. It will be a valuable resource to most individuals involved in swine medicine, diagnostics, and production.
