Book Synopsis

The definitive reference tool for understanding francophone Louisiana and its rich, French variety

Library Journal

This thoroughly researched lexicon draws its rich content from extensive field interviews, archived recordings, and texts published after 1930. Incorporating all French-derived vernacular from Louisiana's five major regions, Valdman (Chez Nous) and Rottet's (Society and Variation) concise entries include spelling variations, phonetic pronunciation, part-of-speech designation, English meaning, contextual examples, and parish usage. An illuminating preface relates Louisiana's 1682 discovery and the transformation of regional languages by various immigration waves, including the influx of folk, Acadian, and plantation society French. A more comprehensive counterpart to Valdman's Dictionary of Louisiana Creole, it will prove an invaluable resource for regional culture scholars and linguists.
