Duane Brown has been a counseling professor for over 35 years and has been a professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill for over 25 years. He received his Ph.D. in counseling with a minor in psychology from Purdue University. During his time at the University of North Carolina, he has been the coordinator for the Counseling and Counseling Psychology Program and the School Counseling Program, and has served as the Chairperson for the Division of Human Development and Psychological Services. He has written several texts with Allyn and Bacon, McGraw-Hill, Houghton-Mifflin, Jossey-Bass, and the American Counseling Association.

Jerry Trusty is Professor of Counselor Education at Pennsylvania State University. He has experience as a school counselor for middle school and high school students, and he has been a counselor educator for the last 13 years. Before coming to Penn State in 2001, Jerry was a counselor educator and Assistant Dean at Texas A and M University-Commerce and a counselor educator at University of Alabama-Birmingham. He is currently Coordinator of the Secondary School Counseling Program at Pennsylvania State University. Jerry has published numerous research studies in ACA journals, psychology journals, and education journals, and he has published a book on multicultural counseling. He is currently Associate Editor for Quantitative Research for Journal of Counseling and Development", the flagship journal in the counseling field."

This textbook outlines several models for comprehensive school counseling programs, then defines specific components of the programs identified in both the comprehensive guidance program model (CGPM) and the ASCA national model.
