K-Gr 3-The rhythm and repetition of this popular author's words, along with his easily accessible collage and tissue-paper illustrations, breach cultural boundaries easily. But it's hard to mess up a translation of a book by Carle. This dictum holds true for this unattributed Spanish translation of From Head to Toe, in which a succession of children imitate the actions of animals. As each animal states what it can do, a child responds in kind. This Spanish version retains the same sense of joy and fun as the English original published in 1997. Of course, this is probably due in part to Carle's signature artwork, which is especially lively here. But the translator's sensitivity to the Spanish-speaking child who will hear this book read aloud has also played a part. Recommended for libraries and bookstores.
