Children's Literature

This is a very odd book. It's one of five in the "Last Dragon Chronicles It is very readable, in fact I would call it a page-turner, but.... The characters seem to have some depth, and the story itself is rather fun. Imagine a woman who makes clay dragons and somehow has the power to give them life. Each dragon has a personality, and a task—there is a Listener, a Healer, a Chronicler—and they know enough to say very still when somebody who doesn't know them is around. Now, after many years of exile, real dragons have returned to Earth. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Hard to say. We know that there will be a tremendous battle (between good and evil, among other things) but once the battle is fought, what happens then? Believe it or not, there is no happy ending. There is no ending at all, since everyone is destroyed, but we are given a little hope. "Thus it would be written in the Chronicles of Dragons: In the new beginning was the Word. And the Word of Gadzooks was...Sometimes." Passages like these will be incomprehensible to readers lacking in basic knowledge of the Bible. Not recommended. Reviewer: Judy Silverman
