Children's Literature

Robin Hood is a folk hero who has been written about for more than four hundred years. He was an English nobleman who stood up to the evil men who were oppressing the poor. As the story goes, he robbed the rich and gave to the poor. In this book aimed at proficient readers, kids are introduced to the major characters in the legends and given a summary of major escapades. As with others in the series, there are sidebars to provide background about the time period, dress, social customs, home life and much more. It is a great way to introduce the classic stories and also a good choice for reluctant readers and adults who are learning to read English. There is a note to parents on the opening page about the series and the importance of reading. There also is a table of contents and at the end of the book is a glossary. A Level 4 book in the "Dorling Kindersley Classic Readers" series. 2000, DK Publishing, and 3.95. Ages 5 to 10. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
