Carol Ren Kneisl

This is the eighth edition of a book written forhealth professionals who work with people in crisis. There are severalvery thorough case studies that require interaction by the reader usingthe balancing factors paradigm unique to this book. The previousedition was published in 1994. The purpose is to provide an overviewof theory and a guide to crisis intervention for all persons in thehelping professions. Appropriate across the spectrum of mental healthdisciplines, this book, written by an acknowledged expert in the field, can also be used by non-professionals in the crisis field (policeofficers, corrections personnel, lawyers, and any persons who attend atnatural disasters). The unique feature of this book is the crisisintervention paradigms. The quality and currency of the references isdisappointing. The most current were from newspapers, magazines, andpersonal communication. Those from the health science literature wereoften outdated. This book needs references to the currentresearch. It is a must for all health professionals and those whowork with people in crisis. It is the ""bible"" in crisisintervention. This new edition has several new features -- aninteractive paradigm exercise in the case studies, and new chapters oninfertility, violence, and substance abuse, as well as coverage ofacute stress disorder and Internet addiction. Its purchase bybookstores, libraries, and individuals is highlyrecommended.
