New edition of a reference in which Cole (U. of Connecticut) and Smith (Michigan State U.) introduce the dynamics of the American criminal justice system. Designed to take advantage of internet resources, the text and CD-ROM focus on how criminal justice involves public policies that are developed within the political framework of the democratic process, and the concept of social system as an essential tool for explaining and analyzing the way criminal justice is administered and practice. The 15 chapters discuss the criminal justice process, police, corrections, and the juvenile justice system. New coverage addresses disparities in the treatment of minorities, changes in policing and crime control, and other topics. Contains many color and b&w white illustrations. Annotation c.
