School Library Journal

Gr 4-6-A few short chapters acquaint readers with tools/materials, techniques, and a few projects. Right from the start, safety is addressed regarding tools (heat gun, adhesives, paper trimmer, etc.) and the need for adult assistance in certain steps. Most materials could be purchased in craft stores, from catalogs, or on the Internet. Small, sharp photos enhance the texts on every page. In all three titles, design is clearly discussed, as is the importance of learning basic and creative techniques. Rubber Stamp has five projects (in three or four steps): a terra-cotta flowerpot, spring greeting card, wrapping paper, canvas beach bag, and homemade stamps (sponge, string, leaf). Scrapbook addresses the use of photos, embellishments, adding words, computer possibilities, and more. Painted Stuff includes four projects (in six or seven steps): a flowered mini-tote, checkered frame, treasure box, and fancy flowerpot. All three books list required materials, have small color photos, and include clearly explained, numbered steps. Boxed text provides additional information on palette, creativity, work-surface preparation, paintbrush care, practice, patterns, stencils, brush use, tools and materials, caution warnings, tips, materials to avoid, sample themes, and more. Along with Laura Check's The Kids' Guide to Making Scrapbooks & Photo Albums! (Williamson, 2002), these introductory books will appeal to children about to embark on a new hobby.-Augusta R.
