Tina M. Mattera

This is the second edition of a book that introduces mental healthcare for this age group to the professional with some knowledge of adult psychiatry. The first edition was published in 1990. This book is to be used in conjunction with clinical supervision to guide the novice student or resident in child and adolescent psychiatry in their work with these patients. This comprehensive text covers the spectrum of child psychiatric disorders and their treatment, including areas of new research and controversy. It is a valuable resource for those just beginning to treat child psychiatry patients. Both authors are credible authorities in their field and they have published before. In addition to covering all of the DSM IV diagnoses and their medical and psychosocial treatments, this book also provides helpful sections such as references for parents and an extensive index of tables. This index includes information about family developmental tasks, mental status exam, examples of standardized diagnostic assessment interviews, Iowa Conners Teacher Rating Scale, medical contributions to ADHD, etc. In the eight years since the first edition was written, there has been much research done in the area of child and adolescent psychiatry. This book is written based on the most current literature available and as there is tremendous investigation that continues in the field, so this second edition is necessary.
