Gideon Koren, MD, FACMT, FRCP(C) is the director of the Motherisk program at the Hospital for Sick Children, as well as a Professor of Pediatrics and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Toronto.
A reference guide to the risks of medication, disease, environmental toxins, herbal remedies, food, alcohol, cigarettes, recreational drugs and such taken or exposed to expectant or breastfeeding mothers. Includes practical advice on avoidance of risks.
The Motherisk Program at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children has counseled women about pregnancy risks since 1985. Koren, the current and founding director of Motherisk, provides a readable and reliable book addressing these issues, including the safety of medications (over-the-counter as well as prescription), exposure to disease and to the environment, foods, nutritional supplements, herbs, and exercise during conception, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. Through narrative, Q&A, and tabular forms, the author presents information about fetal risks and then ranks them as safe, probably safe, possibly safe, unsafe, unknown, or unclear where appropriate. Although several commonly prescribed medications are not mentioned at all (e.g., Fosamax) or not listed in the index by brand name (e.g., Ativan, Lexapro), this book nonetheless serves as an important reference tool for mothers-to-be and new mothers. Recommended for consumer health collections.-Linda M.G. Katz, Drexel Univ. Health Sciences Libs., Philadelphia Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
