Lawson is known for (1867-1922) developing an Australian form of the short story that, along with his poetry, expressed a set of late 19th-century attitudes that had become vital to an influential account of Australian cultural history. Lee (U. of Southern Queensland) explores his literary reputation as a writer about rural life in the context of engagements between the local and the national.
