JOHN MORT has worked as an adult services librarian, writes a column on Christian Fiction for Booklist and has published an award-winning novel and a collection of short stories.
Covers nearly 2,000 Christian fiction titles, featuring detailed annotations and bibliographies.
Written by the Christian fiction columnist for Booklist and part of the well-respected Genreflecting Advisory series, this book offers a historical overview of the genre, including introductions to the major authors of Christian fiction. Also included are the rarely explored subgenres of Catholic, Mormon, Amish, Mennonite, and Quaker fiction. The nearly 2,000 annotations include complete bibliographic information. Icons indicate those titles produced by Christian publishers, recommendations for young adults, award winners, starred recommendations, and those that are well suited for discussion groups. There are a number of mainstream authors included who seem well outside the realm of Christian fiction. Titles by Stephen King and John Irving are annotated with limited or no indication that these are not the "gentle reads" that Christian fiction fans often seek. In contrast, the annotations of John Updike's books note that they are "not for the easily outraged," a warning that well could apply to the King and Irving titles. This reference is strongly recommended for public libraries, special libraries with a Christian audience, and high school libraries with a large number of Christian students. Index.
