Book Synopsis

All the essential bibliographic information on this Connecticut composer's scores, life and writings compiled in one volume that all American music scholars will want to own.

Library Journal

This new volume in Routledge's "Musical Bibliographies" series focuses on American composer Ives. Though including items dating back to 1921, it does not attempt to duplicate all the entries in Geoffrey Block's exhaustive Charles Ives: A Bio-Bibliography; nor does it try to include all of the scholarly writings on Ives. In fact, Sherwood (music editor, Indiana Univ. Pr.) purposely works in tandem with Block's book and lists only the most important items on Ives. The annotations are informative and often cross-referenced to other entries and sometimes entries from Block's book. For major works, lists of reviews are included. The bibliography is divided into 11 main sections, including primary reference materials, book-length studies, general music studies, topical studies, and individual studies by genre. Several interesting sections include "Representations in Theatre, Dance, Poetry, Film, and Fiction" and "Web Sites." In at least one case (David Schiff's "The Many Faces of Ives" from Atlantic Monthly), the web address is listed in the entry under "Significant Festivals" but not in the list of web sites. Given that Sherwood's book is intended to complement Block's, this is a required purchase for any serious student of Ives. Recommended for academic and large public libraries or those with a particular interest in American music. Bruce R. Schueneman, Texas A&M Univ. Lib. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
