ROSS LAIRD has worked as a professional librarian, researcher, and archivist and has recently opened a collector's record shop in Sydney, Australia. He is the author of Tantalizing Tingles: A Discography of Early Ragtime, Jazz, and Novelty Syncopated Piano Recordings, 1889-1934 (Greenwood, 1995) and Moanin' Low: A Discography of Female Popular Vocal Recordings, 1920-1933 (Greenwood, 1996).
Includes all known Brunswick label recordings through 1931, including subsidiary labels such as Vocalion and Melotone.
Following an historical survey of the Brunswick company and its development up to 1931, these four volumes provide a listing of the company's recordings during the first decade and a half of the label's existence. Because the work is organized chronologically, most users will probably be dependent upon the several indexes that list recordings by artists (in each volume), and in volume four by numerical listings, series, a consolidated index of artists, titles, and publishers. Some of the artists whose original recordings are represented here include Irving Berlin, Howard Dietz, George Gershwin, Harry Warren, and Hoagy Carmichael. The types of work are also diverse, including spoken work, jazz, vocal, choral, blues, classical, children's, and country music. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
