Reviewer:Margaret R Hurst, BSN(University of New Mexico Hospital)
Description:Intended for patients and their families, this book is written as an aid to negotiating a breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. A third edition is appropriate, as therapies and treatments are constantly changing.
Purpose:The purpose is to provide comprehensive information to women receiving care for breast cancer. It arms them with information in order to make informed decisions about their treatment and become more of a partner in their care.
Audience:Although targeted at patients diagnosed with breast cancer, the book could also be used by healthcare providers who are not physicians or oncology nurses as a reference for teaching patients about their disease.
Features:This book covers a range of topics, from diagnosis and treatment to medication interactions, diet, and support groups, to name a few. It does not really use any innovative methods to present the information. One of the shortcomings is that it is geared towards readers who have at least a high school education, if not higher, which may leave out some populations.
Assessment:This is a very useful reference for people wanting to learn more about breast cancer and how to negotiate their care or the care of a loved one. The third edition is necessary as information/treatment options continue to evolve.
